Janne Da Arc is a classic Japanese rock band. They are Yasu (vocals), You (guitar), Ka-yu (bass), Kiyo (keyboard) and Shuji (drums). Their music is soft pop and rock, and easy to recognize from Yasu's personal voice. Their name doesn't come from the French saind Jeanne d'Arc, it comes from character of Devilman called "Janne Da Arc".
The band has been together since year 1991, with the name it has got now. Before that the band had existed as a project of Yasu, Kiyo and Ka-yu but when You joined the band, it becamed named Janne Da Arc. Between years 1992 - 1997 the band got to make only four demotapes, but after that their times of glory have begun.
Their mini-album, Dearly got released in April 1997 and it was followed by another mini-album Resist in December of the same year. After that they held a little promotion tour and put out their third mini-album CHAOS MODE in March 1999.
To reach more fame, they changed the band's imago to visual kei. Their music didn't change at all, but the new kind of imago helped the band's first single as a visual kei band rose to Oricon top 50 single chart. By that they also managed to get contract with Cutting Edge Records which is a sub-division for the label avex trax (for example record company of Ayumi Hamasaki).
Their first major album, D・N・A, made big success. As the band started to find their fanbase with their original style, they also slowly abandoned the visual kei -style. This also continued their success, as they've up to date released 12 albums (three indies, nine major albums (includes their collections)), 26 singles and 13 DVDs.
Even they were formed much before, on 9th May 2006 they celebrated their 10th birthday (they chose the date because that's when their final member Shuji joined the band) and also released an indie collection box.
Currently the band is on hiatus as every member is working on their solo project.
