Koichi was born 1st January 1979 in Ashiya, Hyogo. When he was 12 (that'd be year 1991) his sister sent an application for him to Johnny's Entertainment, a label that house's most of the Japan's top male musician groups, without letting Koichi know about it and Koichi got accepted there.

For beginning in JE Koichi and is to be bandmate Domoto Tsuyoshi (who shares the same surname but whom he has no relation to) started as background danceres for artists Hikaru Genji and SMAP, along with the other Johnny’s Juniors.

In 1993 Koichi and Tsuyoshi formed a group called Kanzai Boys and later for their debut Garasu no shounen, 1997, they changed it to KinKi Kids. The single and their first album sold over million copies and right on the second - of course - KinKi Kids became sensational. Since this first single all their singles have reached place 1 in Oricon Top Charts and they have a Guinness World Record for "Most consecutive #1 singles".

Not only Koichi did prove himself as a musician but also as an actor. At year 1994 he made his first dorama debut Ie Naki Ko. Later that year he starred in Ningen Shikkaku with Tsuyoshi in where they had bigger roles both. Before this he had already appeared in some musicals. At 2003 Koichi got awarded "Best Supporting Actor" for Remote.

Since 2000 Koichi has been the leading character of musical called SHOCK which gets performed every January/February in Imperial Garden Theater of Tokyo. At 2004 Koichi released a solo album which included mostly songs from the SHOCK musical but also solos from KinKi Kids' albums and songs written especially for this album. In this place he also held his first solo tour "KOICHI DOMOTO LIVE TOUR 2004".

Koichi's real first solo album came out in 2006 when he released single Deep in your heart/+ MILLION but - LOVE and album mirror that were followed with tour titled KOICHI DOMOTO CONCERT TOUR 2006 "mirror" 〜The Music Mirrors My Feeling〜.Earlier on 2008 he released also single "No more" as 米壽司 "Maizu Tsukasa" who is his role-character from Sushi Oji!, a dorama.

2009 took place for new single titled Ayakashi and Koichi held his third solo tour 堂本光一 CONCERT TOUR 2009　Best Performance And Music.
